It's very, very rare that I consider a book's movie to be better than the book itself. In fact, I really don't think I've ever had this thought before -- until now. I actually saw the film version of this story before I read the book (also a rare occurrence for me), and since I enjoyed the movie so very much, I was really looking forward to reading the book. Unfortunately, I found the whole thing to be quite a disappointment. Yes, the basic plot line which I enjoyed in the movie was still there, but there was also an extra 200-250 pages of needless fluff. A better editor with bigger scissors was truly needed with this one. I recommend seeing the movie, but once you do, there aren't many reasons to follow it up with the book.
