This is a very sweet story about Katie, a 13-year-old girl who discovers a lot about who she is and about what is really important in life as she lives through her summer vacation. Much of her learning comes about through her two summer jobs and through her friendship with Cynthia, who is basically her only friend. It certainly isn't an action-filled plot, but Katie's narration is so touching that action isn't needed. Although the 1960s time period might appeal to people of my age, I also think young adults could relate to Katie's problems with parents and friends.
