Being too old for real combat duty Steinbeck came to Europe as a war reporter. This novel is a collection of his articles. The emphasis is on the people, the common soldier, not surprisingly coming from this great social commentator of the US. Great reading stuff, somewhat surprising was his unambiguous prejudices against Arabs. Must have been quite an unpleasant encounter with this population group.
