This is the last book my son allowed me to read aloud to him. Since the heroine is female and he was about 9 or 10 or so, he didn't always want to discuss what was going on or admit he "connected" with the main character but he listened intently. I loved how softly and humorously this book dealt with difficult issues. Although he would never pick up this book now that he is so grown and macho, I am glad he heard this story and that it lives somewhere in his soul. Perhaps the lessons of change and loss will visit him when need be or perhaps he will read it to his children before they grow to old to listen to stories read by their parents.

Erin This is a beautiful review. You have this kind of--- I don't know what else to call it--- peaceful faith, that your son absorbed and learned from this book. "...and that it lives somewhere in his soul". That is such an amazing statement! Because it does! And you're absolutely right! The things we read can stick with us like stories of our own. I have faith like you. He will think of it when he least expects it.

Dollie Thanks for your kind comment. It is a really lovely book on so many levels. I think Sharon Creech is a great writer.
