At first, I was really excited to read this book! My professor made it sounds pretty much m&mazing.
When I actually read it, however, i was slightly disappointed. The book is composed of many short stories about the citizens of a small town named, you guessed it, Winesburg, Ohio.
The short stories are all very interesting and quite beautiful. My complaint is that I wanted to get to know the characters more. I wanted more, dammit!
I felt like there were too many loose ends, too many unanswered questions. Feeling a bit unsatisfied, I decided the book was overhyped.

HOWEVER, now that I am writing my essay on Winesburg, Ohio, I am reading some of my favorite short stories much more closely, I am appreciating the book so much more. Anderson uses some beautiful imagery, and I am finding that Anderson actually does let the reader get a deeper glimpse into the characters' minds through imagery and little side comments made by the narrator.

I think Winesburg, Ohio as a beautiful and haunting message. Read it!
