Juliana Fiord is an out of placed Italian in the British Ton. When her mother abandons her, she is sent off to live with a rich half brother in England who would be Gabriel St. John, the Marques of Ralston whom we met in Nine Rules to Break. Juliana is homesick and heartbroken when all of England it seems is against her and her scandalous past, but when she meets Simon Pearson, the Duke of Leighton all thoughts are set aside in order for her to make a plan to see passion brought into his life.
Ever since his father’s passing, Simon has set out on a mission to bring respectability to his name which his father so carelessly lost. Even though he commands respect wherever he goes and the ton bows down to him, he seems to feel he needs to marry well in order to cover the scandal that is his sister Georgiana; whom we met in Ten ways to be Adored. It seems Georgiana has found herself with child and has run away from her controlling brother into the arms of Minerva House where she can peacefully reside until she gives birth.
But it seems Simon believes when the scandel gets out, that his sister has born a child out of wedlock, it will bring down everything that he has worked for and so he decides to wed a daughter of the peerage. But when he meets Juliana who challenges him at every turn, he wages a battle within himself that pits Juliana’s heart against his strict code of honor.
This last book in MacLean’s numbers series is a fun delight to read. Juliana was both reckless in trying to make Simon have some passion in his life but also comical in trying to translate from one language to the next. I fell in love with the Duke of Leighton along with Juliana and I was sad to see the series end.
