Fans of Scandinavian mystery fiction and fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy will enjoy this story of an Icelandic detective returns home from Boston to hide from a hit man and finds himself engulfed in a twisted plot he struggles to make sense of before he falls victim to it at last. Is what is going on related to the case back in Boston, or has he stumbled across the one true ring of legend and Tolkein's fiction? The one thing he can be sure of is that he doesn't know who, if anyone, he can trust. Nicely plotted, with all the atmosphere we expect of a northern mystery. The unraveling of the legends and the Rings books is layered and somewhat repetitious, which creates the mood but can be a little hard to slog through in spots, much like Tolkein's novels.
