I have really mixed feelings about this one. I admire what Chris Lynch did – tell the story of a date rape from the rapist's point of view – and the book certainly has an important and timely message (not just about rape but about how we perceive ourselves), but man is it ever clunky. I didn't buy the narrator's voice for one second, and his relationship with his widower father – casual, jokey, apparently anti-disciplinarian – struck me as equally false. I try to remember that it's Young Adult Lit and regress myself to what I would have found worth reading as a 14- or 15-year-old, and I still think this book is a load of bollocks. Great idea, lousy execution.
