This novel is about two high school girls who have a secret relationship. Jesse is a very butch lesbian girl who likes to cut her own hair and likes to protest things. Emily is the popular girl who hides her relationship with Jesse because she has a boyfriend. Jesse starts to protest the involvement of a WAlmart cooperation in her school, but Emily supports it. I liked the forbidden relationship aspect. I don't like the preachiness of the book, and while I don't necessarily disagree with the points, I don't like "issue" books. I did however like the voices that both characters were portrayed in.
