This book rivals Unbroken: A World War II Story Of Survival, Resilience, And Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand. Thus, I have to give it 5 stars. The message throughout the narration is one of hope and perseverance.
I began reading this book knowing very little about the circumstances surrounding Giffords' attempted assassination. I knew only what I gleaned from headlines and nothing else; in fact, I thought she passed away. This book had a tough act to follow considering I just finished (and enjoyed) Throw Them All Out: How Politicians and Their Friends Get Rich Off of Insider Stock Tips, Land Deals, and Cronyism That Would Send the Rest of Us to Prison, a book about political cronyism. I was understandably turned off by all things political.
Despite these two points, the authors did a fantastic job of bringing me up to speed with the necessary details and guiding me through an unbelievable story. I particularly liked the insights and anecdotes provided by Mark Kelly. The story is told strangely anachronistically; while I'm not sure it gave the book any benefits, I was still engulfed.
After reading this story, I want to move to Arizona to vote for Giffords, buy her company's tires, and dedicate my career to an incongruous mix of immigration policy and space exploration.
I highly recommend.
