The Hedgewitch Queen is a great fantasy novel where danger and violence reign in the fight to rule a kingdom. Vianne is the level-headed companion to the princess, whose job it is to protect and help her navigate the intrigues of court. All that changes when a distant relation stages a coup d'etat and Vianne barely escapes with her life. As the plot unfolds, it becomes paramount that she determines who to trust, for her life is forfeit if she is wrong. Thus begins The Hedgewitch Queen.
This book starts with a bang and keeps one guessing until the end. I liked the premise and how Vianne must decide what course to take, and how to survive. She is all that is left of the royal line, and this pushes her to take the role of queen no matter how reluctant she may be. Her character develops throughout the story, and I like the growth she makes into the person she must be. The question remains: are the choices she has made truly her own, or has she been merely manipulated by others? Hopefully, the answers lie in the next book.
