Sherlock Holmes out west....

I really liked this book. Although a basic murder mystery, the twist, as the title implies, is the "detective" being an uneducated Cowboy with his brother acting the role of Dr. Watson.

Old Red and Big Red are better matched than Holmes and Watson since they are brothers who clearly have a strong bond with each other, as is demonstrated in scenes where they are separated and their sense of anxiety that comes along with that separation.

Hockensmith's use of the language of the old west helps transport you to old Montana adding depth to the story and to the characters. His writing style is clear and concise with no convoluted passages that make the reader wonder 'what's he talking about'.

Overall a very enjoyable read.
