This graphic novel by Jessica Abel follows Carla, a half-Mexican, half-German woman who moves to Mexico City in order to find her roots and herself. She arrives barely speaking Spanish and eventually makes a life for herself, but, as the title suggests, she doesn't exactly find herself. I really connected with Carla's feelings of curiosity and confusion around her ethnic heritage. The plot slows down a bit in the middle, but then it really picks up and goes full speed ahead to the end. I wasn't thrilled with Abel's art, basically realistic line-drawings, but the illustration definitely made the book more worth reading. Without it, I'm not sure how engaging the story would have been.
