More like a 3.5. It was excellent in presenting biographical detail, and was an exciting read. Oddly, though, it skimped a bit on technical detail. I say oddly because Rhodes has written on technical topics before, and because he seems to have researched the torpedo problem fairly well. (Background for people who aren't submarine geeks: in World War II the US submarine force's torpedoes were pretty likely to not explode or to become circlers and target the sub that launched them.)
