This is a short book about Joan Didion and loss and aging. I read it quickly and found it a little thin and labored, but felt also that its weaknesses are what make the book interesting. It is so personal and leaves the author so exposed that I feel cruel agreeing with her assessment that her past writing is far more fluid than her current work. In this book, the same brief memories reappear and repeat, but their repetition doesn't create power as much as reflect how our minds tend to travel the same roads over and over when we are captured by memory.
