One of my best friends in college really shouldn't be my best friend. Much of her personality centers around her sense of humor, and I generally am not amused by anything she finds funny. But I think she's hilarious!

Mindy Kaling is like that. I'm not a huge fan of The Office. I definitely don't find her comedy icons funny. On paper, this is a disaster waiting to happen.

But Kaling's writing stays light and fresh on a level that allows me to breeze through the chapters consistently giggling. She manages to stay delightfully neurotic without becoming too strange. And beneath the jokes about failed comedy specs and wasted internships, she manages to project a self-effacing sort of intelligence that is instantly endearing.
