Richard When you think that Shakespeare hoped to become famous for his poetry, it makes you read them with a different eye. Have you got a favourite sonnet?

Colin Bruce Anthes Excellent question. Some of his later (we think) sonnets were so bleak and shattering to the view he builds in his romantic middle poems, that one kind of has to love them for their sheer force. But although it suffers from overplay, I saw the movie Venus when it came out in theatres, and in it Peter O’Toole gives an incredible reading of “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?” I have never experienced a sonnet, by Bill or any other, so powerfully.

How about yourself sir? Is there a standout for you?
