I'm giving 'Freedom' 5 stars, and I'll tell you why: it was the quickest, darkest and most redemptive novel I've read in years. Franzen is brave enough to admit that humans are brutal to one another (more so to the people they care most about), selfish and deeply insecure. In this big, "unjust universe," we struggle to simply get along with one another. Franzen has created a beautiful story filled with joy, pain, love, despair and depression, grief and survival. It reminds me that we're all just a bunch of psychotic lunatics. I loved this novel. What a delight to read!
