1.This is a concept picture book.

2.How hungry can a caterpillar get? Well, this Very Hungry Caterpillar eats his way through a variety of foods so that he can curl up in a cocoon to become a gorgeous butterfly.

3.A. Eric Carle combines several concepts into one very easy to read picture book suitable for elementary readers. The butterfly life cycle, days of the week, counting, and sequencing are all concepts that can be grasped by reading this ingenious book with vibrant, original artwork and a small caterpillar who eats holes all the way through the story.

B. The greatest aspect of this book are all the concepts covered in such a simple story that began with the author playing with a hole punch. While the caterpillar is searching for food he ends up eating one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, and three plums on Wednesday and so on and so on. Each day he eats continues to eat more until he reaches Saturday where he eats ten things! Readers will love to follow this adorable little caterpillar to his next meal and throughout the week.

C.“He [the caterpillar] started to look for some food,” (p5) begins this little guy’s adventure in eating. The one apple on Monday page is big enough for only a single apple illustration with a hole, as if the caterpillar ate right through the book. The next small page, only big enough for the two pears on Tuesday, also has a hole in each piece of fruit to show the caterpillar is still eating. When he reaches the end of the week, “he wasn’t hungry any more—and he wasn’t a little caterpillar any more. He was a big, fat caterpillar” (p13) until pages 15-16, “he was a beautiful butterfly!”

Curriculum Connection- A great resource to teach all of the above concepts, days of the week, butterfly life cycle, colors and healthy foods. But I would use this to teach sequencing, which food the caterpillar ate on which day and make charts to easily show this relationship.
