I first read this about 15 years ago, it's been so long that I didn't remember the plot at all.

Excellent book, reminds me a lot of Starship Troopers but in a Horatio Hornblower sort of way. The protagonist is someone thrust into a situation much before he's prepared, and his internal monologues remind me a lot of Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games.
