Waiting about a year and a half for a sequel these days is almost unheard of, Tainted Soul was worth the wait. We reunite with Gabriel and Aleksi three years after Tainted Blood left off. Life has been going well for the loving couple. Aleksei is still trying to figure out what exactly Gabe is while Gabe is busy at work reuniting families from different races through the use of portals that connect to other worlds.
So why is Gabe feeling like he's losing his mind? Having thoughts he wouldn't normally have and wanting to hurt Aleksei? Behaving in unpredictable ways? Forgetting important things? Doing things that should be impossible for him as a mostly human to do? The questions mount up as this tension filled mystery unravels keeping us on edge through most of the book.
I loved this darker and a bit grittier sequel. I tend to have a problem when stories, especially sequels in fantasy, expand too much beyond my little box to the point that it becomes overwhelming, but that wasn't the case here at all. The world building, the different races, the distinct voices were exceptional and easy to follow. My comfort zone was teased a couple of times, all taken care of in a way that wasn't overly justified. I still felt their love through all the challenges and doubts, through all the blood, sweat and tears and it made me cheer harder for the couple. Gabe cranky and fed up was the best, couldn't help but love him more and couldn't help loving this book.
