I don't wear perfume. And yet I need a copy of this book.

It's always a joy to read books from authors who are passionate about their specialty. When those authors are not only passionate, but unafraid to be blunt, you've got a book like Perfumes. Beginning with a brief history of perfumery and the underlying chemistry, the majority of the book is an alphabetical series of reviews of the best -- and worst -- fragrances on the market.

Part organic chemistry lesson, part stand-up comedy, these reviews demand to be read out loud, whether they're scathing dismissals or effusive essays on the masterpieces of the genre. I didn't wear perfume before reading this book, but I'm going to start.
