Fourth in the series. Much stronger than the last installment, this work takes us to Scotland, and a range of locales and settings in that beautiful country are skillfully evoked as Inspector Ian Rutledge deals with a murder charge involving the former love of Hamish, the soldier/friend he was forced to court martial and kill during the bloody trench warfare in France. The manner in which the "ghost" of Hamish torments the shell-shocked hero--one of the distinctive elements of this series--takes on a deeper resonance and significance as we learn more about the earlier life of both Hamish and Ian, even while trying to solve a fascinating mix of questions concerning murder, missing persons, and an adorable child of unknown parentage.
