The first Balzac I've read. I would say based only on this that he understands both requited and unrequited love deeply, and has quite a way with high-blown sententious rhetoric. Lots of interesting historical stuff (fuck me, doctors in the early 19th century...), lots of still-relevant social and individual insights. Very moving at times.

Not sure the proto-Victorian tone would be for everyone, but after all the Hemingway-esque stuff I've been reading it was fun to grapple with.
