3.5 stars - It started out slow, built up to a central strong narrative, and petered out with mushy spiritual mumbo-jumbo. At parts it felt like Tepper was channeling Herbert's Dune rather too directly, but the characters and classes were well crafted and distinguished. I especially liked the book's exploration of nonhuman animal sentience, even if it was too moralized for my tastes.
