I think of that Simpsons episode where Marge tells Lisa, "One day you'll grow up and write depressing stories about people coming to terms with things". It's a little too easy to do the David Foster Wallace thing and write about the misery of modern American life - offices, suicides, anxiety-laden housewives in supermarkets and all that. Still, this is this guy's first collection of stories and he's certainly a very good writer. Promisingly, he builds his characters up well in a short amount of pages and his tone leans more towards Wallace's obsessive/depressive than Palahnuik's pretentious/overwrought. I look forward to his first novel.
