Thankfully this was a short book. Misery gets piled on top of misery - certainly making most readers feel grateful for the lives they have, the families they were born into, and the opportunities they've been given in life. There is a pointedly repetitive style to this book, which makes sense since it's mostly a journal, and who doesn't repeat herself from time to time in a journal? The outcome is that we're stuck having to read the same horrific stories in various iterations, so that by the time the book ends we are more than ready not to have to hear about them anymore. The upside is that the protagonist, Precious Jones, does manage to remain optimistic about her life - which should be an inspiration.
