I think it's important to remember when reading this book that it was published in 1890-something. It was the first book of its kind; it was ground breaking. Sure men from mars and heat rays sound stupid and cliched now, but Wells was a literary pioneer. His was the very first heat ray.
This book is bloody good. It is neither self-important nor bland; nor rushed, nor does it drag. I loved the ending - for the storyline to have circled in on itself was brilliant.
And if you buy this edition, do read the essays and notes on the authoer. They're very informative.
