I rated this book highly because, like its jacket, it's simple and self-explanatory. The authors won't be winning any Nobel prizes in literature but the mountains of research presented in bite-sized chunks is impressive. I love a book that provides a promise and delivers. They are rare in all genres. I chose this book to gain a better understanding of what willpower is and how/why it is both strengthened and weakened. This information was provided in layman's terms along with much more. My hat is off to academic writers who can present scientific data and analysis of human motivation and behavior that doesn't read like some bedraggled doctoral candidate's third draft thesis. The most helpful nugget of information was learning that while our minds assign willpower to various categories of our lives (some for work, some for family, some for working out), this is a futile process. We have one supply and we exhaust it as we use it throughout the day. While our mind doesn't make the connection, our willpower does and while it can be strengthened, it can collapse from overuse. There are plenty of other great tidbits and ones not so surprising but they're all presented well and it reads smoothly. This is the best kind of self-help book - pure science and logic. In the future, I'll make sure to pick up other books written by Baumeister. He seems to know his shit. For a person of science, the praise can't be much higher than that.

Leslie Let's see what the newest science says. And friggin' use it for once! Interested to see how this coincides with Change or Die and Deep Survival.

Leslie It coincided at significant junctures with both.
