[Manila:] has been razed by an earthquake, bombed, occupied, bombed again and rebuilt.

Only Warsaw suffered more damage [than Manila:] during World War II.

Historians, at least, have managed to form a general agreemtn on the five decisive events that shaped – and continue to shape – the nation: the beginning of rice cultivation in the southern Cordillera, which led to the construction of the Banaue rice terraces; the Islamization of Sulu and western Mindanao; the arrival of Magellan; the arrival of the founder of Manila, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi; and the Christianization of Luzon.
