4 1/2 stars.
The wrongful conviction and imprisonment 0f a gardener who worked for a retired US Senator.
Ramon Munoz has spent 6 years in prison for the murder of a young college girl. His mother hires PI Paige Holden to help to prove her son is innocent. Ramon's wife is killed by a sniper while passing on important evidence to Paige.
Paige, we first met in "Silent Scream" has been working with Clay Maynard for 3 months. She left Minneapolis as felt somewhat over protected by her friends after she was injured and her close friend murdered. Since then she has a Rottweiler 'Peabody' for protection. She goes to ASA, Assistant State Attorney Grayson Smith, the man who prosecuted Ramon, with her evidence. She doesn't want to go to the cops as believes some are involved in corruption within this case. Grayson enlists the help of Detective Stevie Mazzetti, with Baltimore PD whom he knows he can trust. It becomes apparent that this case was manipulated from the start and there is a conspiracy going on between law firms.
As Paige and Grayson start to re-interview people connected to case, they find they are murdered. Grayson is putting his job on the line by pursuing this case as his boss has told him to drop it or the secret Grayson has been keeping will be made known. They are several attempts made on their life's.
You really have to have patients reading this book. Like all K.R books, it goes through a time line of just 4 days for over 500 page book. You have alot of characters from previous book "You Belong To Me" and some interesting other characters, The Carters, Grayson's adopted family. Mainly FBI Agent Joseph Carter. K.R maintains the tension through out the book. It might have started out proving a wrongful imprisonment but with each layer uncovered there is unpredictable and disturbing facts revealed. If you want a good police procedure, you'll like this book, even if its a PI and Attorney carrying out the investigation and of course you get the romance.
I hope K.R will stick with the Baltimore PD as believe book out there for Clay and Stevie. Stevie has been through alot and when the sniper is revealed she is devastated and finds it hard to believe as does the PD.I really enjoyed this book, it wasn't as gruesome as "You Belong To Me" which I think had a bit of an edge over this book.
