** spoiler alert **
I learned a lot about ice cream making and the history of the British postal service in the first of the essays, but I still couldn't totally get where she was coming from in the flag-waving essay (despite nearly seven years of attempts at relating on this subject), and I don't even think she tried to understand email (after 16 years of it being around!). She writes about how the old London mail service ran every hour because there were no telephones, but bemoans short email messages, saying that the have replaced longer letters, though really they have just replaced many telephone calls. I highly recommend her previous collection, Ex Libris.
