** spoiler alert **
So after mulling it over (and being up at 4.30 in the morning for no good reason giving me some spare time for once) I've decided to give this a shot...
As always (I really need a disclaimer on my goodreads page don't I?), my reviews aren't really reviews they are just me ranting about how good/bad the book is and things I liked/didn't like and characters I hated/loved etc. If you want an actual review, there are lots of great reviewers here on goodreads. I'm not one of them.
So it was really the premise that had me hooked (and my longing for the nostalgia of the 90s) but honestly, if it was 1996 (I was 6 in 1996 but that didn't stop me playing all my murder mystery games on the computer) and I somehow had access to my future via Facebook, I think I would grab it by the balls ALOT more than Josh and Emma did.
Most of the 3 stars in my rating is because the premise is drool-worthy and I really liked Josh as a character. What weighed the book down was Emma being an almighty queen of the skanks (I may have miscounted but that was like 2 ex boyfriends, 1 boyfriend she was breaking up with, then she had a thing for one of the exes (? Cody?? can't remember) and then eventually was into Josh). Some more points were lost when Emma and Josh really didn't grab this Facebook thing by the balls and delve into more creative explorations such as looking at important world events. I dunno, maybe knowing something about September 11 could have prevented it? More safety measures could have been in place for Hurricane Katrina, or closer to home, the bloody Queensland floods for a start!!! So much world devastation could have been prevented just by having a little look around (okay yeah Facebook might have been limited in that aspect but a little digging could have helped).
In fact there are kind of INFINITE possibilities (sporting match wins, future investments in companies that take off such as Apple or Google) but it's understandable that the book would want to maybe only focus on one aspect the future i.e. who Emma and Josh were going to marry. Fair enough... but even a taste of the other possibilities would have been nice. And even so, Emma really did react badly to such small snippets of her future.
I felt things could have been resolved better. Okay we kind of knew Emma and Josh would end up together (predictable), but I would have liked more resolution about Kellan and Tyson, and even to an extent Sydney and Josh's supposedly gay brother. It was all just so focused on Emma/Cody and Josh/Sydney the whole time and for once the relationship/romance aspect really didn't work for a book such as this.
But on the whole I enjoyed it enough to give it the 3 stars so we'll stand with that.
