This is a fictionalized history of the coal miners' war of 1921. The main source of the story seems to be the events of Matewan, WV. People who have seen the film will find about a third of the book pretty familiar.

Putting aside the fascinating history and the thinking it makes you do about capitalism and American history, the best things about this book are the characters, many of whom are extraordinary individuals, and the setting. These folks have the mountains in their blood. No doubt that was a big reason why they stayed in the area after the coal operators took their land and their former livelihood.
