bookshelves: not-finished, attempt-again-when-series-complete

I had it rated as a one star but there was no point in giving one flimsy star after even one chapter—one chapter which I couldn’t take too seriously enough to believe that anything good will come out of it (but I figured that what I “didn’t like” was within that first chapter, bringing about the one star that equates to “I didn’t like it”). I wasn’t going to waste my time on it, and after the author’s recent/past antics there was definitely no good to come out of the book if I had continued to read on and finish it. Would there even be any good? The CW show, maybe? Let’s hope that’s a flop.

My opinion is probably due to the fact that I am male and the whole concept of the book is blatantly horrible from my standpoint as a 19-year-old male. And put that with the writing that is “undercooked", sure, there was nothing for me to like despite only reading one chapter. Even I can predict how this book/series will finish just from knowing the general direction The Bachelor goes and most poorly developed dystopians.

Edit 13/5: I should be a fortune-teller... didn’t I say that the CW show will flop? Oh hell yes!

End Disclaimer:*Let me just put it out there: I am open to anyone and anything. But when people’s voices and words are being taken away from them, the only thing you can do is go against it and play the fight.*

Okay, so after a little thought I have decided to try this book again, BUT when all books are out. I know where this first book will finish, I just know what will happen. But maybe – BUT MAYBE – books two and three will not involve this ‘The Selection’--bachelor thing, and be more original in execution and world. So I guess you’ll be waiting a while (2 years) for a second opinion, but even by then I doubt I’d be still wanting to read it.

I read the first chapter and I just couldn’t take it seriously. And that doesn’t even extend to the fact that the author has been a bad sport.

ALPHAreader Ooohhhh... I wanted to read this one! Now I'm not so sure. What were the author's recent/past antics? (that's always sure to put me off). I haven't heard of any bookish scandals.

There’s been about 5 involving her/her agent badmouthing/bitching about negative review and also contacting Goodreads to remove reviews too.

I know there have been a few online arguments between authors/agents/publishers/bloggers about negative Goodreads reviews, didn't realize she was one of them. Don't suppose you have a link to an article concerning this little tiff, do you?

I’m probably exaggerating with the number of times but there’s been a few or a couple.

Here was the first I was aware of: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Then there is another one saying that her review was removed 5 times.

Soumi(in love with Puck) Roy This book has such cheap romantic lines and weak plot line, UGH. Goodness my review has not been attacked yet. Author used fowl languages on negative review via twitter

I bet all the research Kiera Cass had done was watch every season of The Bachelor from every country. That’s called enjoyment not research, actually. So dystopian has been made a fool of.

Soumi(in love with Puck) Roy I wonder who's gonna watch that Tv Movie and I'm sure the actor and actress currently has no project on their hand so they are doing this one.
As for deleting reviews, author has no power on it, Goodreads is actually deleting them of course with influence from the author

Oh. Wow. That honestly puts me right off reading the book. It's like bad sportsmanship... it's the literary career equivalent to being that Aussie rower who laid down half-way through her race. It's just not the done thing, and it reflects badly on your whole team/industry.

Braiden And I mean most of these quotes people have been putting up are A. W. F. U. L.

Jessica I'm forcing myself to get through it, nothing exciting is happening, and I'm at 53% on my kindle... come on already. Usually I go crazy over hyped up dystopians (Divergent, Hunger Games, Partials) but this book is not doing it for me.

message 14: by Nhi (new) - rated it 1 star

Nhi Vo Now I'm even more sure that I shouldn't waste my time on this book. Seriously, some authors can't take constructive criticisms nowadays.

message 15: by Sheree (new) - added it

Sheree This was on my wishlist because I adored the cover. Regardless of reviews, positive or negative, I will never support a book or author when said author or agent has displayed unprofessional and appalling behaviour. Looks like I won't be missing out on much Braiden LOL

Braiden Probably not ;) Make your own ending up. Like... Aspen is in fact a psychopath and kills America.

message 18: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy I wanted to read this one. it seemed like the kind of bubble-headed read I might shamefully enjoy -- but I surely don't want to give any attention to this book after the author's bad behavior. It's such a shame authors want to get on here and act unprofessionally for a decently large audience of potential readers/consumers!

Lisa (Badass Bookie) Reading this now and I'm really enjoying it. You're right when you say a book isn't worthy of a rating after only reading one chapter because you shouldn't judge a book after one chapter ( if I did that, 99% of the books I read suck).

Braiden, it's probably because you're a guy but yeah when people read your review and see a one star that doesn't do much for the book especially since you read only one chapter right?

There is this whole controversy behind the book that reflects on the author and her agent but if you gave this another go, I'm sure you find somethings you like ^_^

<3

message 20: by Braiden (new) - added it

Braiden I’m sorry Lisa but I won’t be returning to this book anytime soon. There was things within the first chapter which deterred me from reading on (even though I read halfway into the second chapter and still couldn’t go on).

Putting one star doesn't do anything to the larger picture. Look at how many 5 stars are going up. I’m not doing anything to sway people from not picking it up; I didn’t even say that it shouldn’t be read. This book is about taste; not ratings. And if all you girls love a book like this then so be it, but I’m allowed to have my opinion even if I didn’t read it in full. Can I be a guider for boys? I mean, I didn’t even deter Bernardo from reading and finishing here.

Lisa (Badass Bookie) STILL O_O You should give it another go ( because I said so?) Haha come one! When am I EVER WRONG?

Wait so my comment was good reasoned?

Lisa (Badass Bookie) Kinda. Still think you should leave the star rating blank because 14 pages isn't really the deciding verdict but *shrugs* I'm not going to argue with you because I guess it's your review.

Vickie Ramage I don't believe one chapter is enough to rate the book. Why rate it at all?

message 25: by Braiden (new) - added it

Braiden I simply didn’t like it Vickie and that’s what one star on goodreads means. So why can’t I let people know that I didn’t like it by seeing a star?

I’m a good-spirited and all-round genuine person and I usually don’t like to be the centre of discussion and controversy as Lisa has so kindly introduced, but I feel strong about why I did still give one star from where I’m standing, and although you may not like it and I take your thoughts positively, I still don’t believe I’m being hard on anyone. People have their reasons to read or not read this book and I’m not stopping them.

Lisa (Badass Bookie) Vickie wrote: "I don't believe one chapter is enough to rate the book. Why rate it at all?"

That's what I said :) But the bottom-line is that it's Braiden's review :)

Simmer. Vicki was just wondering! :)

Vickie Ramage A negative does affect the author however...

Karen Castro I could not fathom the message of this book. They mislead a lot of people that this was a dystopian novel.
