Culinary Cozies thinks SPRINKLE WITH MURDER is a “Yummy Read.” This first book in the Cupcake Bakery Mystery series, by Jenn McKinlay, is a sugarcoated treat.

This cozy mystery centers around three lifelong best friends that own Fairy Tale Cupcakes. Melanie and Angie are the working partners while Tate is their financial backer. Life was “sweet” … until Tate’s not-so-nice fiancé is murdered with a cupcake rolling out of her hand. Thus beginning a police investigation that promises to shut down the bakery and put one (or more) of these friends in jail.

And when the cops clearly have it wrong there’s nothing left to do but solve the case yourself, right?!?

Let’s look at the individual ingredients in this culinary cozy:

Culinary Flavor – Oh my! Cupcakes! They are the focus of the business, the center of frustration between Melanie and the victim, the possible murder weapon, and so much more. And let’s not forget the recipes in the back. I may have to cut this review short just to go bake some. Yummy.

Cozy Setting – Unlike a lot of cozy mysteries this one is not placed in a small town. The author did try to convey that kind of feel anyway, but it simply wasn’t there. Instead, the setting bounces around a large city with a few focal points (the bakery, Mel’s apartment above, Tate’s house, the victim’s design studio, etc).

The cast of secondary characters were still very “cozy,” however. Mel’s mom was classic. Along with Angie’s list of protective brothers, this story brought to life the frustrations that family can bring to a situation … as well as a lot of amusement.

Amateur Sleuth – Melanie Cooper was a feisty amateur sleuth. Her emotions were everywhere and the reader got to go along for the ride. Not to mention, there is a nice little romantic element to her story too.

Mystery – This cozy was a quick read. The mystery wasn’t overly heavy or thought-provoking, but enjoyable non-the-less.

I think SPRINKLE WITH MURDER by Jenn McKinlay deserves a 4 out 5.
