Wait, didn't Lauren Kate write this back in 2009 and call it Fallen? Brashares, whose pretty prose managed to carry her through The Last Summer of You and Me, fumbles in this thinly-plotted and pathetically researched paranormal "romance." It's difficult to say which is more deserving of contempt, the author's total lack of concern for historical detail in a novel set largely in flashback to different eras or the "hero's" lack of backbone. Daniel is a veritable Hamlet of indecision, and spends the majority of the novel not doing much of anything - which, you know, is always hot in the male lead - and then finishes the book by...not doing much of anything, offstage. Not even worth taking to the beach, unless you just need something to drape over your face whilst you sleep.
