I love Robert Hughes, He is SO acerbic and opinionated. In the spirit of his older book on the city of Barcelona, this tour of Rome begins with Romulus and Remus and examines the social, political, religious and artistic history of the city since 752 B.C. Loved his observations about the effects of organized religion on society and, of course, his clear-eyed view of the glories of Roman art through the centuries. Be warned: this book is long and dense. It took me over a month to complete.
