Very creative imagination by the author and the subtle twists of magic were a nice surprise but the black and white theme got to me. I was very glad when I moved past the first chapters and my eye got some relief from the black and white pages. More black and white imagery would follow. And follow. And follow.

And while the story was creative in setting the scene and giving us imagery, the magic was too subtle and the story itself felt like it was in constant "set up" mode - where something grand would finish it off. Instead it all faded away, literally.

Sort of an odd contrast - the vibrant scene setting with a dull story but there it is.

I'd recommend it for a creative writing exercise and I'm glad I read it but, like the characters themselves, this book will fade away from me.
