This amazing book examines the resonant yet ever-shifting cult of the Brontes, following the history of the cultural response to their novels and the way the sisters themseves (Charlotte and Emily anyway) became icons at different times and for different reasons. With extremely thorough research and examples, Miller shows how the Brontes' images changed to suit the times, from the 1840s to the late twentieth century. The subject matter couldn't have been more fascinating to me, but the book also served less directly as a history of the genre of biography since Victorian times. This was an unexpected thrill, since it was something I knew nothing about and had never thought of, and I just love slightly irrelevant cultural history. I found "The Bronte Myth" to be very readable, clearly expressed and entertaining.
