This novel was painful to read. The refugees' situation was so devastating and sad. At first I was unenthusiastic about the writing, but I did become very invested in the characters as the book went on. My big issue is the huge disclaimer at the end about how the events were true except that the author compressed the timeline for the sake of the narrative and also fabricated the involvement of his fictional characters. I'm not sure that was necessary or added to the story at all.
