This story uses clear language, quotes by Martin Luther King, Jr., and beautiful collage art to tell the story of the civil right’s leader and his quest for equality. The art is sophisticated but wholly accessible to children, with emotional depth and a clear focused connection to the text on each spread. Historical topics such as public segregation, the Montgomery bus strike, the March on Washington are conveyed clearly, and allow the author the opportunity to address the philosophy of nonviolence and community unity as tools of change. The author effectively describes the Rev. King’s leadership and vision, and we see why he was a great man without distancing him from us as readers.
