I grew up reading books about pioneers (Caddie Woodlawn, the Little House Books, the Anne books, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, etc etc). While the female protagonists in those books were hemmed in by their social roles, they didn't seem as suffocated as this girl.

I like the alternate history theory, and I like Patricia Wrede (her writing kept me engrossed, even though I didn't actually like most of the characters). I will read the next one, but I really hope the heroine gets a backbone, or I might have to, you know, stop reading. (That'll show her!)
