M.L. Tyndall's novel, "Surrender the Heart" is the first in the Surrender to Destiny series. Marianne Denton and Noah Brenin are engaged to be married. The well off Marianne and the merchantman Noah would make an ideal match. Except that neither of them want to get married. During their engagement party, Noah walks out to set sail early but Marianne chases him down and end up out at sea with him. Noah's ships, Fortune, ends up in the hands of the enemy British. Marianne and Noah must learn to trust each other, and G-d, in order to survive.

"Surrender the Heart" provides a great lesson in one's relationship with G-d but lacks the character relationships to make it a great novel. Marianne and Noah follow common literary archetypes, which result in a one-dimensional characters. From a historical standpoint, this novel gives a face to the suffering during the War of 1812. The impressment of American sailors on British ships was not something to take lightly and this book really highlights that point. Noah and Marianne are cute together but their story doesnt stand up next to other novels written during the 1800's.
