Onyx (Lux, #2)

Smart, funny, and aware that sexual chemistry doesn’t equal true love, I am head over heels in love with Katy, the book loving heroine of the Lux series. Pair her up with a macho dreamboat that thinks he knows best, and the banter and action don’t miss a beat. As much as I enjoyed OBSIDIAN, ONYX was even better.
The irreverent back and forth flirtation between the main characters is one of my favorite parts of this series (and color me juvenile, but Katy calling Daemon a “douche canoe” made me laugh out loud). Katy’s verbal darts are just the right foil for Daemon’s ego and alpha tendencies, and their banter never gets in the way of the smoking hot chemistry. Katy’s quips often bridge the “cute guy with a huge ego”/”my neighbor is an alien” gap, and the supernatural aspects of ONYX are just as seamlessly integrated with the plot. Though YA, these kids face very, very grown up issues. Above and beyond underage drinking and sex, their happily ever after has to deal with Department of Defense oversight, mating to continue a species, and the knowledge that being together means constant peril.
The sheer number of dangers surrounding Katy and Daemon means I read ONYX in a state of suspense. While the character twists were fairly obvious, Armentrout took me by surprise with a few of the developments between opposing groups. There are no small answers for the challenges these characters face, but given the developments in Luxon/human mythology that Armentrout reveals, I think it’s safe to assume she has big plans for where this series goes next. Lux is one of my favorite, bawdy teen series, and I can’t wait to get my hands on book three.
Sexual Content: Suggestion of rape, discussions of sex, sexual scenes.
