Alix is a precocious, intelligent child who is determined to befriend and 'save' the local drunk's son Nick. Alix's family takes Nick in giving him a room to stay in whenever his abusive father is after him. Nick's closest neighbor is a single woman with 6 children who prostitutes herself in order to raise her kids, and sells herself to Nick's father on occassion. Nick takes one of her daughters under his wing and protects her fiercly. Nick and Alix stay close throughout their childhood, but Nick remains secretive and ashamed of his father's actions. Alix grows up, goes through puberty and is determined to have Nick. She is in love with him and of course all goes to hell.
This book had me surprisingly emotional. Maybe I am just emotional, but damn this book really just dragged it out me. I loved the book, but its the type I cant read that often because it made me cry LOL.
