Written in verse, Inside Out & Back Again tells the story of Ha, a 10-year-old Vietnamese girl whose family is forced to leave her home country during the Vietnam War. With her father missing in action, Ha, her mother, and 3 older brother make the journey to Alabama where they are sponsored by a family. Ha's family must adapt to new jobs while Ha must adapt to American school, where she feels stupid, and bullied, for the first time in her life.

We learn in the afterword that the author drew from her own experiences as a young girl to write this book, which makes it that much more meaningful and inspiring. Fans of novels in verse will love this book.
