I'm finding it hard to know what to say about this book, although I really liked it. The prose is so transparent that the book, although literary, seems like a straight-forward story. In fact, I found it to be something of a page-turner. The thing I liked most about it was the vivid cast of characters. Once it gets going, the story is told almost as a set of vignettes; one for every stop on the protagonist's journey toward Siberia. At each stop Lillian, the protagonist, encounters a person who has some effect on her journey. The ending gave me pause, and I had to read it a couple of times to make sure I understood it, but I think it was just about perfect.
