3.5 rounded up to four stars. Man, Lily Bart cannot catch a break. This is my second Edith Wharton book (after Ethan Frome) and I'm getting the sense that she's not one for happy endings. That said, I've been meaning to read more of the Western canon -- that is, the fruits and vegetables of my book diet. I listened to the audiobook version and the reading was quite good, although the reader sounded a lot like Ellen Degeneres. Still, Lily's descent to the bottom of the social strata is awfully sad stuff to read. Here's hoping Edith has something a little more chipper up her sleeve...
