this book slightly annoyed me when lerner begins talking about how she "fell" into teaching after discovering she wasn't the best writer (wait--that sounds like my life...) but i do think it has some useful advice from an editor's perspective. i use the chapter called "The Wicked Child" for my class on telling the truth (instead of detailing facts) mainly because she starts out talking about phillip roth, who i LOVE. but also because she does a good job of demonstrating the difference between what's essential to tell and what isn't, as well as how f-ing hard it is to tell the truth. no matter who you are.
